چکیده

A comprehensive study of spinal health in ancient Nubia has not been achieved to date. This is a component larger survey health. It presents comparative analysis spondylolysis, with the aim providing an insight into quality life, environmental and socio-political stresses faced by individuals Nubia. provides bioarchaeological data from 515 adult preserved lumbar vertebrae (where spondylolysis most commonly observed) five populations that date Meroitic Medieval period (350 BC–1500 AD). Contextual settlements cemeteries were used interpret data. The results demonstrated overall crude prevalence 6.6% for (individuals affected preserved) true 1.2% (number affected). also revealed number possible trends, example, males affected, there was increase over time, highest rates observed period, higher rate among Mis Island compared other populations. activities such as farming, building or rowing well changes could have contributed seen this study.

Osteochondritis dissecans in ancient British skeletal material.

OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS (which is not to be confused with osteochondritis juvenilis) is a common disease but it is also a somewhat mysterious one. Its essential pathology consists of an avascular necrosis occurring in the sub-chondral bone of a joint followed by degenerative changes in the overlying cartilage. As the disease progresses, a zone of demarcation forms around the avascular area an...

Ancient Human Parasites in Ethnic Chinese Populations

Whilst archaeological evidence for many aspects of life in ancient China is well studied, there has been much less interest in ancient infectious diseases, such as intestinal parasites in past Chinese populations. Here, we bring together evidence from mummies, ancient latrines, and pelvic soil from burials, dating from the Neolithic Period to the Qing Dynasty, in order to better understand the ...

Ancient DNA from Nubian and Somali wild ass provides insights into donkey ancestry and domestication.

Genetic data from extant donkeys (Equus asinus) have revealed two distinct mitochondrial DNA haplogroups, suggestive of two separate domestication events in northeast Africa about 5000 years ago. Without distinct phylogeographic structure in domestic donkey haplogroups and with little information on the genetic makeup of the ancestral African wild ass, however, it has been difficult to identify...

Archaeogenetic Evidence of Ancient Nubian Barley Evolution from Six to Two-Row Indicates Local Adaptation

BACKGROUND Archaeobotanical samples of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) found at Qasr Ibrim display a two-row phenotype that is unique to the region of archaeological sites upriver of the first cataract of the Nile, characterised by the development of distinctive lateral bracts. The phenotype occurs throughout all strata at Qasr Ibrim, which range in age from 3000 to a few hundred years. METHODOLO...

Authenticating DNA Extracted From Ancient Skeletal Remains

The survival of DNA, the most informative biological molecule, for periods of at least several thousand years in bone was demonstrated more than four years ago. However, difficulties with authenticating ancient DNA have made diagenetic studies problematic. It is therefore essential that these problems be overcome before the question of DNA survival can be addressed. Here we describe our work wi...
